Dream music video
The narrative of the lyrics follow Dizzee rascals rise to fame, discussing how he was up to no good when he was younger and his move to Tottenham to try and get radio play. It tells the story of how a younger hims dreams have finally come true, this is a positive message as it shows that he came up from nothing to fame and tries to portray that anyone else can too trying to inspire young people like him. However with the sound of the video and some context combined with the contents of the video the narrative could be interpreted as much darker. A subtle commentary on the state of the music industry and the systematic racism and control involved.
For one the song seems to be far from what Dizzee's original sound and image was. The video uses light pastel colours in the intro, setting a childish and light theme for the video immediately contrasting the grime image Dizzee was known for. The song also uses a light hearted cheesy pop sample from an artist called "captain sensible". This is immediately confusing for the target audience of the video, Dizzee's fans would have known him as a more gritty street artist as authenticity is one of the most important principles in grime. The softer pop elements may lead some of his fans to believe he sold out however looking at the opening words "how am I gonna pull this off without sounding dumb, this is too sensible for me man". These lines imply Dizzee doesn't want to be rapping to a pop sample and maybe his switch up from the culture he came from wasn't his idea.
This idea that Dizzee isn't in complete control of his musical ideas is heavily implied through props, costume and setting. Using microcosm representations to portray a bigger commentary on the music industry. The video takes place in a middle class white womans house, the main content taking place on top of her piano as she plays and sings. This woman is representative of the white elite in the UK, the middle class old white people who have control over many things in the UK including politics and media. Many subtle actions this woman does are used to present and outline issues the middle class white UK demographic including her looking physically on edge when Dizzee directly addresses her and her recoil in discuss as a police brutality is presented, despite doing nothing to get involved.
The social commentaries continue with the way that Dizzee's youth and street culture are presented. They are presented with string puppets that border racist representations in small settings on the white ladies piano. This follows the childish theme presented with the use of light pastel colours used earlier. Doing this could present the control that the white elite have over the minorities and lower class of the country, the youth being presented as literal toys in control of the white woman on in her home. This could be representative of 2 things, the attempts to dehumanise and ignore the less privileged in the country or the entertainment they get from controlling them. The only black person who isn't a string puppet in the video is Dizzee, however he is clearly doing something he isn't entirely comfortable with, suggesting the strings are only cut when he complies with what the people above him get what they want.
The idea of the struggling minorities being insignificant to the middle class UK is pushed further by the cultural reference of muffin the mule, which the video is almost a parody of being framed and set in the exact same way.
